What sintered stone actually is

Sintered stone starts as natural mineral powders, mostly quartz, feldspar and clay, compressed under extreme heat and pressure until the particles fuse into one dense slab. Nothing binds it together, no resin, no adhesive layer, which is the real difference between this and an engineered quartz worktop. The result is harder, more heat resistant, and does not develop the faint yellow cast a resin bound surface can pick up after years in direct sun.

Why it holds up in Nairobi

Nairobi kitchens sit close to the equator and get direct light for most of the day. A resin composite exposed to that for years can fade or yellow along the exposed edge. Sintered stone will not, and it takes a hot pan straight off the stove without marking, which a laminate or a softer natural stone cannot promise. It is also non porous, so it does not stain from turmeric, wine or oil the way an unsealed granite can.

Finish is a spec, not a preference

Beco's range spans Polished, Silky, Matte, Soft Matte, Bush Hammered and Grip finishes. Polished and Silky read as premium and suit a feature wall or a reception desk under good light. Matte and Soft Matte hide fingerprints and water marks better, which matters on a kitchen island that gets touched all day. Bush Hammered and Grip add texture underfoot, worth specifying anywhere the surface might get wet, a bathroom floor or an outdoor step.

Where it actually goes in a project

Kitchen worktops and islands are the obvious use, but the same slab does feature walls, vanity tops, reception counters and cladding over an existing wall without demolishing it first. Some stones in the range are cut book matched, meaning two slabs are paired so the veining mirrors across the seam, which is what a large feature wall or a wide island needs to read as one continuous pattern rather than two slabs stood side by side. Others are one face only, a single consistent pattern that suits a smaller worktop where there is no seam to hide.

Cost against the alternative

Granite and quartz worktops in Nairobi are usually quoted per square metre, with a wide range depending on origin and finish, until a fabricator measures the actual kitchen. Sintered stone here is priced per slab regardless of the shape cut from it, KES 60,000 to 95,000 for the full 3200 by 1600mm sheet, which is easier to compare against upfront. Ordering by the half slab is also possible, so a single vanity top is not costed against a whole sheet it does not need.

Looking after it

Sintered stone needs less maintenance than natural stone, not none. It does not need sealing the way granite does, but a hot pan left directly on the surface for a long period can still mark some finishes, and an abrasive scourer will dull a polished face over time. A damp cloth and a normal kitchen cleaner is enough day to day.

Before you specify it

Confirm the finish against how the surface will actually be used, not just how it looks in the showroom. Ask whether the stone is book matched if you are covering a wide wall or island, since that changes how many slabs the job needs. Check thickness against the application: 12mm is standard for a worktop, and a fabricator will confirm if an edge detail needs it built up further.
